What is infertility?

Infertility refers to the biological inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy to full term after having regular unprotected sexual intercourse for at least a year. This medical condition affects an estimated 1 in 8 couples in the United States.

There are several potential causes of infertility in both women and men. In women, common causes include:

• Ovulation disorders - problems with ovulation account for most cases of female infertility. This may be caused by health conditions like thyroid disorders or PCOS.


• Blocked fallopian tubes - damage or obstruction can prevent the egg from moving through the tube. This may be caused by pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or scar tissue.

In men, common causes are:

• Sperm disorders - issues like low sperm count, poor sperm quality, or motility can make it difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg.


• Testicular failure - problems with the testes reducing hormone output or sperm production.


• Ejaculation issues - obstruction in tubes carrying sperm or retrograde ejaculation into the bladder.


• Chromosomal defects - abnormal numbers of chromosomes in sperm cells.

Diagnosing infertility typically involves thorough medical histories and physical exams of both partners. Blood tests to evaluate hormones, imaging tests to look at the reproductive organs, and semen analysis in men may also be carried out.

Based on test results and identified risk factors, treatments may include medications to regulate ovulation, surgery to repair anatomical problems, or assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like in vitro fertilization (IVF).
